Along with praising BAM for establishing a highly esteemed profile around the globe, Irons talked specifically about the crucial role the arts play in any community during tough times.

“I know instinctively that at moments like this in our society when we are facing a slow revolution of capitalism being seen not to work and people in huge problems economically,” Irons said. “I know that the one thing we need to bind together is not only, as they would say at the Olympics, sport, but art—it’s the thing that binds society.”

An account of the evening’s events from The Hollywood Reporter

” [Gore]  Verbinski was followed by Oscar winner Jeremy Irons, one of the many fine actors who were convinced to work for the young first-time director J.C. Chandor on Margin Call because of his marvelous script, which produced a first-rate and timely thriller. Irons presented the best breakthrough director award to Chandor, who subsequently recounted the funny garb in which Irons was adorned when he arrived on set to shoot a scene in a corporate boardroom, out of which he changed into boxers and a wife-beater before commencing in a table read-through. Chandor thanked Irons and the rest of the cast for delivering his words in a way that made him forget they were his own, and in so doing giving him a career.”

And more on Jeremy’s clothing from The Carpetbagger Blog from The New York Times:

“The Thursday for Best On-Set Appearance: Jeremy Irons, “Margin Call,” as recalled by J.C. Chandor, the director of that Wall Street thriller: “Jeremy walks into this high-tech building in the middle of Manhattan wearing leather lace-up boots above the knee, riding jodhpurs that are ballooning out, a Seinfeld-era pirate shirt with leather lace up – no buttons on the thing, they hadn’t been invented when it was made – and just to top it off, a sombrero.” (It would’ve been a whole different movie if they’d let him stay in that outfit.)”

Irish Repertory Theatre presented a concert performance of the classic Lerner and Loewe musical Camelot, as part of the company’s 2011 benefit gala at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre, on Monday, June 6. Charlotte Moore adapted and directed the production, with musical direction by Mark Hartman.

In Camelot, King Arthur has created a utopian land of chivalry and civil rule. But when his beloved Queen Guenevere and Sir Lancelot, his most trusted knight, succumb to their passion for one another, he faces a terrible dilemma that will rock his kingdom to its very core.

The show starred Jeremy Irons as King Arthur, James Barbour as Lancelot, and Melissa Errico as Guenevere. The cast also included Dewey Caddell, Jacob Clemente, Rory Duffy, Josh Grisetti, Christopher Lynn, Victoria Mallory, Brian Murray, Ciarán Sheehan, James A. Stephens, and KT Sullivan.

Ciarán O’Reilly provided narration, and the concert staging included a large chorus and accompaniment by a full orchestra.

In addition to the concert, the gala included dinner with the cast at Sardi’s, following the performance.
