poems that make grown men cry

The book is available to pre-order from Amazon.com

In this fascinating anthology, one hundred men—distinguished in literature and film, science and architecture, theater and human rights—confess to being moved to tears by poems that continue to haunt them. Representing twenty nationalities and ranging in age from their early 20s to their late 80s, the majority are public figures not prone to crying. Here they admit to breaking down when ambushed by great art, often in words as powerful as the poems themselves.

On 29 April 2014, at 6:00pm at the Lyttleton Theatre, selections from the book will be read.  More information and a link to purchase tickets can be found HERE.

Poems That Make Grown Men Cry

Grown men aren’t supposed to cry. Anthony and Ben Holden, and Kate Allen (Director, Amnesty International UK), introduce readings from poems that haunt a host of eminent men; they explain why, in words as moving as the poems themselves.

With Melvyn Bragg, Ian McEwan, Mike Leigh, Simon McBurney, Ben Okri and Simon Russell Beale; directed by Richard Eyre.

Jeremy Irons Joins Cast of Jesse Owens Biopic ‘Race’

Jeremy Irons has joined the cast of the Jesse Owens biopic Race.

From Variety:

Jesse Owens Biopic Gets Boost From Family

FEBRUARY 7, 2014

By Leo Barraclough

The daughter of Olympic athlete Jesse Owens, Marlene Owens Rankin, was at the Berlin Olympic Stadium on Thursday to attend the international sales launch of “Race,” the biopic about her father. Variety spoke to her and Stephen Hopkins, the director of the film, whose cast Jeremy Irons and Geoffrey Rush have just joined.

Owens Rankin, sitting yards from the spot where Adolf Hitler watched the 1936 Olympics in which Owens won four gold medals, said the film can deliver an uplifting message to young moviegoers.

The message “is about the human spirit — about its endurance and vulnerability — but also the success you can achieve when you are motivated, and persevere in the face of adversity,” she said. “So, hopefully, kids who are underachieving and who lack hope will be motivated by his life and successes in spite of all he went through.”

The film, which was being introduced to buyers for the first time in Berlin by its sales agent Mister Smith Entertainment, tracks Owens’ progress leading up to the 1936 Games, contending with racism in the U.S. and Germany before his eventual triumph. Up-and-coming British thesp John Boyega plays Owens, as previously announced in Variety.

Mister Smith’s David Garrett told buyers gathered at the stadium that they were in advanced negotiations with Carice Van Houten to play Leni Riefenstahl.

He announced that Al Munteanu’s SquareOne Entertainment, the German distributor and an exec producer, and Canadian distrib eOne have boarded the project. Production will start May 24, and with the pic to lense in Berlin and Montreal.

“It will feel like a contemporary story,” Hopkins said. “It is about a kid from the wrong side of the tracks fighting his way to the forefront to represent his country. It should be something where people go, ‘I can’t believe this ever happened.’

“My dream is to present a real hero,” he added. “Someone who does it because of his need to better himself and to be dignified, but not in a stuffy way.”

Garrett said he likes to think of the project as “Chariots of Fire” on acid.

“It is an unbelievable story that if you had written it as fiction people would have gone, ‘Hmm, nah. That’s too amazing to be true,’ ” Garrett said. “It has so many stratas, whether it is the issues of prejudice and segregation, and then the hypocrisy of it all, and how people are prepared to compromise their views. It’s about one man breaking down so many people’s prejudices.”

Munteanu said, “It was supposed to be the Nazi Olympics, and he upstaged it entirely. It is a story about complete and utter dedication at a time when everything was against him.”

Producers include Forecast Pictures’ Jean Charles Levy and ID+’s Luc Dayan.

Jeremy Irons to Play Alfred Pennyworth in Batman vs. Superman Film

Jeremy Irons has been cast in the role of Alfred Pennyworth in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman film, directed by Zack Snyder.

“As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne,” director Zack Snyder said in a statement.

From Forbes: “…the Man of Steel follow-up — tentatively referred to as Batman vs. Superman unless/until a new title is announced — is all but guaranteed to rule the summer, especially now that it’s moved release dates to 2016 for a much stronger position. With Batman and Superman squaring off against one another, plus Wonder Woman dropping in for a brief appearance, and the prospect of some other heroes likely cameoing in some way, the film is instantly presumed to be in the running for a $1 billion showing sight-unseen… Batman vs. Superman — is scheduled to start shooting in Detroit in the coming weeks, and director Zack Snyder was there scouting additional locations last Wednesday.”

Warner Bros. will release the film worldwide on May 6, 2016.

A WORKSHOP WITH THE LEGENDARY ACTOR JEREMY IRONS – Monday Evening 10th Feb 2014

We are delighted that Jeremy Irons is coming in to give a masterclass on Monday 10th February from 7pm-9.30pm at our new venue St. Alban’s Fulham.

Address:
St. Alban’s Fulham
2 Margravine Road
London W6 8HJ
Tube: Baron’s Court

What to prepare:

There are places available for 4 participants, two men and two women who need to read/learn the first scene from Harold Pinter’s Betrayal. This will be followed by a Q&A.

Please note that it can be nerve racking to work on ones skills in front of an audience. Last time we had Jeremy in a few of the participating actors did get excellent opportunities as a result of the workshop, however one or two did feel very nervous and vulnerable in the presence of an audience. Most of our workshops have no audience, however there is so much to learn from this it is an opportunity not to be missed. If you want to participate be prepared to fail before succeeding and come with an attitude of working publicly, rather than performing publicly.

1977
Scene One: Pub. 1977. Spring.
Emma and Jerry meet for the first time in two years. For 7 years they had an affair and a secret flat, and Jerry says no-one else knew. Now Emma is having an affair with Casey, an author whose agent is Jerry and whose publisher is Robert, Emma’s husband. Emma says she found out last night that Robert has betrayed her with other women for years, and admits she revealed her affair with Jerry.
In 1977 Emma is 38, Jerry and Robert are 40. I think this scene is just a two-hander.

Cost:
Participants: £50 (4 places)
Observers £10
