Jeremy Irons Attends BAM Fête for Joe Melillo

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) hosted a special event at the BAM Harvey Theater Thursday evening to honor the institution’s longtime Executive Producer, Joseph V. Melillo, who will be stepping down from his post at the end of the year.

Several of the artists whose careers Melillo fostered over the years paid tribute to him on Thursday night. Robert Wilson created For Joe A Man Who, a collection of vignettes performed by Lucinda Childs, Isabelle Huppert, Jeremy Irons, Chukwudi Iwuji, Nonhlanhla Kheswa, Isabella Rossellini, Carl Hancock Rux, John Turturro, and Wilson himself.

Isabella Rossellini presented a theatrical tribute to one of the most celebrated actresses of the 20th century. Marking the centennial of Ingrid Bergman’s birth on August 29, 1915, Rossellini was joined in performance by actor Jeremy Irons to uncover the woman and artist behind the screen legend. The staging incorporated Rossellini’s own memories of her mother, plus interviews, unpublished letters, personal videos, and previously unreleased video clips and images from private Bergman’s archives.
Rossellini and Irons performed live on stage portraying Bergman and various characters from her colorful life, guiding the audience through her experiences while original film footage and images from her private archive were projected on a screen. Woven throughout the performance were testimonies and stories from friends and artists she knew and worked with, such as Roberto Rossellini, Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Capa, Ernest Hemingway, and many others.

Jeremy Irons and Sinead Cusack at BAM

In March 2012, Friends of BAM were invited to join Friends of BAM Chairs Sinead Cusack and Jeremy Irons for a special screening of their 1988 film Stealing Beauty. This coming of age story explores the relationships of Lucy, an American teenager visiting Tuscany, and the eccentric residents she encounters, including Irons as a dying playwright and Cusack as one of her hosts. The couple recounted their experience of making the film in an exclusive introduction to the audience.
