Jeremy Irons and Helen Mirren performed with Lorin Maazel and the Castleton Festival Orchestra at the 2011 BlackCreek Summer Music Festival at the Rexall Centre in Toronto, Canada on 29 June.
Maestro Maazel conducts the Castleton Festival Orchestra and the women’s voices of the Castleton Festival Chorus in a wondrous romantic program of music inspired by Shakespeare: three excerpts from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, and Mendelssohn’s Incidental Music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, highlighted by spoken performances of Shakespeare verses from A Midsummer Night’s Dream by two incomparable stars of both stage and motion pictures: the extraordinary pair of Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons.
Jeremy and Helen’s portion of the performance began after intermission.

Jeremy Irons at Calvary Hospital Awards Gala
Jeremy Irons was among those in attendance at the 28th Annual Calvary Hospital Awards Gala on 7 June 2011.
The festivities for this black-tie gala began at 6:30 PM. Broadway’s Melissa Errico gave a special performance. Jeremy Irons attended the cocktail reception to congratulate his Camelot co-star, Melissa Errico, before her performance during the awards ceremony.

More than 400 people attended Calvary Hospital’s 28th Annual Awards Gala on June 7 at The Pierre, in New York City. The evening raised $800,000 to benefit Calvary programs and services for advanced cancer patients and their families.
Calvary Hospital is the nation’s only fully accredited acute care specialty hospital devoted exclusively to providing palliative care to adult advanced cancer patients. A 225-bed facility with locations in the Bronx and Brooklyn, Calvary is the model for the relief of cancer pain and symptoms for more than a century. More than 5,700 patients are cared for annually by Calvary’s inpatient, outpatient, home care, hospice, nursing home hospice, and wound care programs.

Sue Lawley’s castaway this week is the actor Jeremy Irons.
He made his name playing Charles Ryder in Brideshead Revisited in 1981 and became known for his quintessentially English roles. It was an image he later sought to discard and he certainly did so in the film Lolita, where his portrayal of Humbert Humbert reopened the controversy about the desires of a middle-aged man for a 14-year old girl. In the film The Mission he played a gentle Jesuit missionary and went on to act as his own stuntman, climbing a perilous waterfall. It was his performance in Reversal of Fortune that won him an Oscar for Best Actor as the real-life character Claus Von Bulow, accused and acquitted of the attempted murder of his wife. Later this month, he returns to the West End stage after almost 20 years to star in the play Embers, a story of friendship and betrayal.

Irish Repertory Theatre presented a concert performance of the classic Lerner and Loewe musical Camelot, as part of the company’s 2011 benefit gala at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre, on Monday, June 6. Charlotte Moore adapted and directed the production, with musical direction by Mark Hartman.
In Camelot, King Arthur has created a utopian land of chivalry and civil rule. But when his beloved Queen Guenevere and Sir Lancelot, his most trusted knight, succumb to their passion for one another, he faces a terrible dilemma that will rock his kingdom to its very core.
The show starred Jeremy Irons as King Arthur, James Barbour as Lancelot, and Melissa Errico as Guenevere. The cast also included Dewey Caddell, Jacob Clemente, Rory Duffy, Josh Grisetti, Christopher Lynn, Victoria Mallory, Brian Murray, Ciarán Sheehan, James A. Stephens, and KT Sullivan.
Ciarán O’Reilly provided narration, and the concert staging included a large chorus and accompaniment by a full orchestra.
In addition to the concert, the gala included dinner with the cast at Sardi’s, following the performance.

A first-hand account from an attendee:
“The Donmar Warehouse is quite a small theater.The five actors were sitting on chairs in a row. They read excerpts from Milton’s Paradise Lost, Books 1 and 9. Jeremy read the part of Satan. The other parts were of Adam and Eve and a Narrator. The fifth woman talked about Milton at the beginning (a bit more than 17 minutes).
Jeremy wore his usual kind of clothes: white shirt, grey vest, reddish scarf, grey trousers and boots (not his riding boots, shorter ones), no glasses.
At the evening performance, the theater was nearly full. The evening performance was video-recorded for Josephine Hart, who was not there. The lady who recorded it said that Hart might share it on her homepage, but there is no guarantee.”

As part of the CD compilation “Words That Burn” by Josephine Hart, there is a recording of Jeremy Irons, Felicity Kendal, Emilia Fox and Greg Wise reading extracts of John Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’, similar to what was performed at Donmar Warehouse.
Jeremy also read the part of Satan in ‘Paradise Lost’ for a BBC Radio 4 production of the Josephine Hart Poetry Programme on 20 April 2008. In that performance, extracts from John Milton’s great Christian epic ‘Paradise Lost’ are read by Jeremy Irons (Satan), Felicity Kendal (narrator), Greg Wise (Adam) and Emilia Fox (Eve).
